Saturday Giveaway

Today's freebie is a rock box. I make these from stoneware, iron oxide, and glass. They are usually small- this one is 1.5 inches by 1.5 inches.

They can be used to store a tiny thing - like a pair of earrings, a

baby tooth, a charm, a four leaf clover- but mostly they are just fun to have. They look very much like a rock until you open them, then, inside is shiny glass with lots of sparkle hidden in the center.

They remind me of some people I know. People who are plain, run of the mill, hardly notice 'em types but who have hearts of gold, secret passions, great humor, and generosity of spirit.

This is your task today. To win this rock box, just think of someone you know or knew with hidden depths. Leave their initials as a comment to this blog, and, if they are still living, think well of them, or maybe visit them, call, or drop a (handmade) card to them in the mail.

I will pick a commenter at random and they win this little rock box. If you don't have a blog associated with your username, leave me your etsy shop name, your twitter name or some way to let you know that you won so I can get your address.

So, get to commenting! The contest is over at midnight Central time, so comments after that are not able to win the little box.

And for me, the person I knew with hidden depths, but an unassuming exterior, was my grandmother. Her initials were IMG. I miss her!

My husband is the person of hidden depths. We're much alike that way. Since we've been together, he's letting others see the hidden parts that he shows to me. His mother is constantly astounded to find out things about him that she never knew.

His initials are MEH.

*giggles* meh...I never noticed that before. He's definitely not "meh"

What an adorable box, AntB! It reminds me of my husband, GJH -- he's definitely one of those persons of hidden depths.

I'm remembering my grandma too. She's in the hospital four hours away, and I'm going to see her on the weekends. She's 94 and lives on her own, refusing 24-hour care because "I don't always want somebody hovering around me!" She also won't hear of a nursing home because "I hate old people!" I ask her to come live with us, but she says she has her own house and doesn't want anybody in her business. She cared for me as a child, and she's just like that box: Strong as hell with a heart that's beautiful and awe-inspiring. She's seen all 9 of her siblings die and her only child. I'm all she's got. Anyway, too long. So sorry. I got lost; I'm thinking of her all the time. Her name, which I love is: Mary Jane Alice Armstrong Leurhmann! And she has always known her own mind and worth!

You blog is awesome. I'm so glad I found it through twitter! And that rock is so freaking cool. What a wonderful way of sending good energy out there. . . Hidden depths has to be my mom. She may have a rough exterior, but her love is boundless.

Beautiful little box... Today, I'm still in shock following my sister-in-law's sudden death last night of a massive heart attack. She was an eccentric lady, a dancer, full of spark! Her initials: LVL... Peace!

Beautiful wee box.
My mother is a woman of amazing hidden depth. She married my father when she was very young. She raised all 6 of their children pretty much on her own, as my father was out of town or working much of the time. She always served everyone else first, and took the smallest portions so that everyone had enough. When my father passed away 10 years ago, she had to learn a new life at age 59. Her partner of 43 years was no longer there to provide for her or take care of things. She has proven how strong she really is.
I would give her this box to keep her wedding ring in, a safe and beautiful place to keep her treasure.

The rock box is such a nice idea...good for children to use for tiny treasures and parents to use for storytelling.

The initials that I am thinking of are JDC, my grandfather. He died when I was 16 years old, and took all of his secrets with him.
